Не помню точно - что изменил - но теперь происходит следующее :
перед тем как запускается (не помню точно как называется программа) экран с запросом ввода пользователя и пароля, монитор неприятным образом переключается в различные режимы три раза - с характерными щелчками.
Смотрел XF86Config - ничего подозрительного там не нашёл - такое впечатление - что X не оттуда настройки грузит.
Ощущение такое - что ему не нравится modeline в трёх местах и он загружает какой - то свой по умолчанию.

В файле я закомментарил все режимы - и всё равно ничего не поменялось - продолжает грузиться вышеописанным способом (см. вопрос выше)
